junebugs-dress-squirrel-full-2 copyHappy October! Even though the trees look green behind me, there’s no denying it’s finally fall. It’s been a while since I’ve worn a novelty print, so this squirrel print dress from Pinup Girl Clothing’s Junebugs and Georgia Peaches Collection is just what I needed. This is the second Junebugs dress I’ve worn on the blog – a few weeks ago I wore their pink and black Amanda Dress.

junebugs-dress-squirrel-med copyAre squirrels the new owls…or foxes? I’ve seen a quite a few squirrel prints and products here and there lately, and I’m not complaining – maybe it’s because they’re fall’s cutest scavengers. I wonder where all the squirrels were when I did this photo shoot because, dude, there were so many acorns!

Here are a few of my favorite squirrel things:

Beach Days Aren’t Over | Bare Feet, Big Sleeves, and a Floppy Hat for Fall

through-the-bluebells-med-beachI never fancied myself a nature photographer, but when you’re somewhere so beautiful and unique, you can’t help but want to take pictures of EVERYTHING. This little beach is part of Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville, Louisiana. The body of water behind me is Lake Pontchartrain, and if you squint at the horizon, you’ll see the Causeway bridge which goes from the Northshore to the Southshore and onward to New Orleans.

through-the-bluebells-beach-medWe’re getting little glimpses of fall here. The weather is still mostly hot, but we’ve had a couple of cool mornings. Maybe the beach is that last place people want to go when it’s autumn, but that’s when I feel like I can really enjoy it. No sunburns or sweating – sign me up!

Sleeves for days!

Sleeves for days!

I’ve talked about “unicorns” here before – dresses you love but, for whatever reason, they’re difficult to find. I thought I was out of luck with this “Through the Bluebells Dress” from ModCloth. When they first introduced it back in the spring, my size went out of stock really fast, so I assumed I was out of luck. I searched eBay and swap groups, and still came up empty-handed. But guess what awesome thing happened – ModCloth brought it back! Is a “resurrected unicorn” a thing? Anyway, I don’t own a lot of billowy clothes, so the sleeves are like a new toy. Hopefully I don’t pass out from all the spinning…

Cypress: The trees with knees!!!

Don’t let the beauty of these cypress trees fool you – they’re vicious! I hit my foot on one of the “knees,” and broke my toe! I’m okay; it wasn’t one of the important ones. Just a reminder to be careful out there!

Maxi-mum Possibilities | My Favorite Plus Size Maxi Dresses and Skirts for Fall

eternity-maxi-dress-full-1Maxi dresses. You haven’t seen me wearing too many of them. Sometimes I get so giddy over a circle skirt or a novelty print, I forget about these tried and true wardrobe staples. I tend to go through phases with fashion, and before my obsession with ’50s and ’60 retro, I was a maxi skirt kind of girl. This was prior to being introduced to the body positivity movement. Since then, I subconsciously associated maxi styles with being told to “cover up,” but now I see that’s far from being the truth.

eternity-maxi-dress-full-2I don’t feel like I’m hiding anything in this dress! It’s called the Eternity Maxi Convertible Dress made by SWAK Designs, and it’s like a dozen dresses in one! The dress itself is a maxi skirt with two looooong pieces of fabric at the bust-line that can be wrapped, twisted, and tied in so many ways from strappy to strapless or even into a skirt. SWAK also offers the same dress in a shorter length with just as many possibilities. It reminds me of a toga, so it’s BC retro for all of us looking for another fashionable era for inspiration.

stella-wrap-collageOn their site, SWAK has an Eternity Dress Video Guide with tutorials on each way to wrap yourself up in this dress. The style I’m wearing is a variation on the “Stella,” except that I tied the ends of my long pieces in the front. What I love about this particular way of wrapping is the shoulder area can stretch from sleeveless to a cap sleeve depending on how much coverage I want, and I still get the cute crisscross in the front…and in the back!

Looking to add more maxi dresses to your wardrobe this fall? Here are some of my favorites:

maxi-dress-collagel-r: Kiyonna Desert Rain Maxi Dress / ModCloth Jam Patched Dress / Torrid Surplice Tulip Maxi Dress / Simply Be Maxi Dress with Slits and Long Sleeves

eternity-maxi-skirt-full-2Let’s talk about skirts. I figured I’d give the “Maggie” wrap a try in the Eternity Dress, and I’m not 100% thrilled. In hindsight, I should have picked a lighter, solid color top to coordinate with the skirt. The fabric isn’t that thin, but the black stripes are so dark they show right through.

eternity-maxi-dress-full-3As for the dress itself, it’s almost too long to be worn as a skirt. I’m tall, and it skimmed the ground. I had to pull the waist up really high not to trip all over it. Unless you’re taller than I am, I suggest getting the shorter version of this dress if you want to wear it as a skirt.

Or you could try some of these:

maxi-skirt-collagel-r: Lane Bryant Ombre Maxi Skirt / Cool Gal Blue Jessica Kane Chevron Maxi Skirt / Lane Bryant Sequin Maxi Skirt / eShakti Chambray Denim Long Skirt (size customizable)

eternity-dress-collage-2How do you plan on incorporating maxi styles into your wardrobe? Let me know in the comments!  I’m glad we all have many hemline options from short to long, and I love trying them all.
