eternity-maxi-dress-full-1Maxi dresses. You haven’t seen me wearing too many of them. Sometimes I get so giddy over a circle skirt or a novelty print, I forget about these tried and true wardrobe staples. I tend to go through phases with fashion, and before my obsession with ’50s and ’60 retro, I was a maxi skirt kind of girl. This was prior to being introduced to the body positivity movement. Since then, I subconsciously associated maxi styles with being told to “cover up,” but now I see that’s far from being the truth.

eternity-maxi-dress-full-2I don’t feel like I’m hiding anything in this dress! It’s called the Eternity Maxi Convertible Dress made by SWAK Designs, and it’s like a dozen dresses in one! The dress itself is a maxi skirt with two looooong pieces of fabric at the bust-line that can be wrapped, twisted, and tied in so many ways from strappy to strapless or even into a skirt. SWAK also offers the same dress in a shorter length with just as many possibilities. It reminds me of a toga, so it’s BC retro for all of us looking for another fashionable era for inspiration.

stella-wrap-collageOn their site, SWAK has an Eternity Dress Video Guide with tutorials on each way to wrap yourself up in this dress. The style I’m wearing is a variation on the “Stella,” except that I tied the ends of my long pieces in the front. What I love about this particular way of wrapping is the shoulder area can stretch from sleeveless to a cap sleeve depending on how much coverage I want, and I still get the cute crisscross in the front…and in the back!

Looking to add more maxi dresses to your wardrobe this fall? Here are some of my favorites:

maxi-dress-collagel-r: Kiyonna Desert Rain Maxi Dress / ModCloth Jam Patched Dress / Torrid Surplice Tulip Maxi Dress / Simply Be Maxi Dress with Slits and Long Sleeves

eternity-maxi-skirt-full-2Let’s talk about skirts. I figured I’d give the “Maggie” wrap a try in the Eternity Dress, and I’m not 100% thrilled. In hindsight, I should have picked a lighter, solid color top to coordinate with the skirt. The fabric isn’t that thin, but the black stripes are so dark they show right through.

eternity-maxi-dress-full-3As for the dress itself, it’s almost too long to be worn as a skirt. I’m tall, and it skimmed the ground. I had to pull the waist up really high not to trip all over it. Unless you’re taller than I am, I suggest getting the shorter version of this dress if you want to wear it as a skirt.

Or you could try some of these:

A SnoBall’s Chance in Louisiana

Don’t call it shaved ice, and certainly don’t call it a “snow cone.” It’s a SnoBall, baby! (And that’s with no “w,” AutoCorrect.) If you grew up anywhere near New Orleans, you’ve probably had a million of them. During the summer, unassuming little shacks become SnoBall stands with people standing in line for some sugary goodness. This is one of the ways we’re lucky that the heat of the season lasts longer for us because once the weather cools off, the SnoBalls go away (unless you’re smart enough to know where the few places are that serve them year-round, you know, in case you’re jonesin’).

snoball-2-editWhat makes a SnoBall different from its imitators is the texture of the ice. It’s much “fluffier” and has the consistency of actual snow. Hey! I’ve seen snow before! It’s not like I’ve never left the state, and we always look fondly on when it snowed here “that one time”. Anyway, in Louisiana you can eat the yellow snow because it’s probably tastes like cake batter, and there are tons more flavors to choose from. You can also get your SnoBall stuffed with ice cream, topped with condensed milk, or doused with sour spray. Then, there are the folks who just like plain ice (who are these people?). This time I decided to taste the rainbow, picking my tri-flavored childhood favorite. This is how most NOLA kids learned red and yellow make orange and yellow and blue make green. It’s science in a Styrofoam cup!

snoball-5-editOne of my favorite SnoBall spots is Bot and Nola’s in Abita Springs. It has a fun retro vibe, tons of flavors, and plenty of seating to chill with your SnoBall on even the hottest of days. They’re open every day in the summer, and you can follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

snoball-4-editAs for the dress, its a Hell Bunny I found on eBay after it was out of stock everywhere else. I recently learned after joining some buy, sell, trade groups that these highly sought after but difficult to find dresses are called “unicorns.” I haven’t seen another one in purple anywhere recently, but if you like this dress and the color blue, here it is on ModCloth’s site.

snoball-6-editWhat’s your favorite summer treat? Let me know in the comments! It doesn’t take much to make me happy. A SnoBall and a cute dress is a great start!

The Southern Girl’s Guide to Fall Fashion

*This post contains affiliate links. If clicked and a sale is made, I receive a commission. Thanks for supporting the brands that make Super Style Me possible!fall-fashion-pinI go though it every August. All of my favorite stores introduce their fall lines, and I want to buy and and wear all of the new things NOW! I check my budget, fill my shopping carts…and then I go outside. Call it #louisianaproblems, but it’s kind of difficult think of autumn when the heat index is still over 100 degrees. This time of year is like the Southern version of Groundhog Day except instead of six more weeks of winter, we have a scorching summer temps, sticky humidity, and no special Bill Murray movie (unless you count Meatballs) to help us laugh about it.

However, you don’t have to experience “Fall FOMO,” even if you live in the lower half of the country. Here are some ways I add autumn to my outfits and still beat the heat:

fall-fashion-med-31- Change Colors: Lightweight clothes can give off autumn vibes if you look for your favorite fall hues. Try shades of gold, burgundy, rust, and brown, and you’ll be one step ahead of the leaves! You can also introduce these colors into you wardrobe with accessories like handbags, statement necklaces, and headbands.

2- Chambray: Meet your new favorite neutral! Chambray isn’t as heavy as typical denim, and the darker versions of this fabric transition even the most summery separates to a new season. Chambray dresses and skirts are super cute and breathable, and a chambray shirt makes a great layer even if you’re only thing making you feel chilly is the AC.

fall-fashion-med-23- Show Some Skin: You don’t have to put your shorts, sandals, and sleeveless dresses away yet! You’d be surprised how well they coordinate with more traditional fall pieces. See this time of year as an opportunity to re-imagine your summer wardrobe. How would your favorite shorts look with a light sweater? Does your new pair of boots go with your tried and true sundress? Oh, the possibilities!

fall-fashion-full24- Layer Later: There are plenty of new fall pieces you can wear right now. Who says you have to put something on top of a sleeveless shell or cami? You can keep the cardigans and tights packed away for just a little bit longer, but if you’re doing your fall shopping now, check out garments that look just as good alone as they do with a warmer wardrobe buddy.

fall-fashion-med copy5- It’s a State of Mind: We’re lucky, really. Where else can you still swim and enjoy fun in the sun well into September? However, it’s understandable that we want a change of scenery after months and months of heat. Hang in there; summer will eventually end. In the meantime, enjoy your pumpkin spice latte…even if it’s iced.

fall-fashion-fullHow are you updating your closet for fall even though it’s still summer? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for visiting me on this hot August day, and until next time, stay cool!
