Does this outfit look familiar? I’ve worn just about everything you see here on the blog before. While I’ve been a bit of a dress hoarder, I still want to get mileage out of my clothes. When I started this little retro journey, I didn’t think mixing and matching was an option – a dress is a dress, right? I do have a handful of separates, but I always thought of my dresses as stand alone things. Now, I’m trying to be a little more money-savvy, and I’m starting to see new opportunities in my “been there, done that dresses.”
In the pictures above, you can see the pieces of my outfit, mainly the dress and the petticoat/skirt, separately. They work both together or on their own. It took me a while to envision them as anything different, but I didn’t want them to retire to the dark depths of my closet either.
1 – Over/Under: Don’t be afraid to layer – even with dresses and skirts! The tulle skirt underneath does a lot to add volume and a pop of color, but it would also look great over the bottom of the dress turning it into a cute polka dotted halter top. Cardigans and tied button up tops are also nice if you’re layering on your top half.
2 – Multipurpose: Is there anything you can wear more than one way? Not to knock the traditional petticoat, but I’ve gravitated toward tulle skirts instead. Since they’re not see-through, so I can wear them both under dresses and on their own as skirts – and the pop of color doesn’t hurt either.
3 – Neutral Territory: While I’m for loading your wardrobe with all the colors, don’t forget to have a few key pieces in neutral colors – and they don’t have to be boring. My dress is black and white, but the polka dot print is still fun and the red looks brighter by comparison.
4 – Accessorize: It’s a good thing to have an arsenal of accessories at your disposal. With a variety of necklaces, belts, and shoes, you can transform any dress without doing much at all.
Thanks as always for reading, and keep mixing it up!
